Larry Poons: Painting is Color!

Yares Art is pleased to present Larry Poons: Painting is Color!, a focused showcase of the artist’s finest late abstract paintings—from 2005 to 2026—at the ADAA Fair at the Park Avenue Armory in New York. Ten works will be featured at the booth, including two new, never-before-seen paintings.

Larry Poons has remained a continually evolving force in American abstraction for more than six decades as one of the last living key figure of the Color Field movement. His practice is defined by an unwavering commitment to risk, experimentation and reinvention, bringing together the mathematical precision of the early “Dots and Ellipses”, the gravitational pull of his “Throws”, and the richly textured surfaces of his “Elephant Skins”. These distinct explorations converge in his latest paintings through intricate layers where color, gesture and matter become inseparable– a reflection of a lifelong pursuit rooted in devotion to color and the physical properties of paint.

The late canvases are dynamic fields of shifting energies: lush coils, loops, sweeps and swaths of radiant chromatic intensities dance in rhythms informed by the Beethoven symphonies the artist listens to while painting. Each work becomes an immersive interplay of color sensation, movement and material presence.

At the heart of Poons’ practice lies the conviction that color is the very essence of painting; not simply an element applied to the canvas, but a living force that generates its own space, movement and meaning. His late works bring discoveries of a lifetime into a remarkable synthesis, while remaining profoundly open to new possibilities.

This presentation marks a significant chapter for the artist, serving as a prelude to Yares Art’s forthcoming gallery exhibition which will open in parallel with a major 60 year retrospective of Larry Poons’ work this spring at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
